THE PRODIGAL SUM concerns Anthony "Rum-Dinger" Ricotta, a recovering gambler, returned home to settle his debts with a stern and respected bookie, Jules "The Jew" Lorenzini, and settle down with his lady-love, fortune-teller and medium, "Madame" Katherine Cooper. However, the homecoming does not come easy for our hero. A year removed from his hometown to avoid his substantial gambling debt, Anthony is forced to abandon his loved ones for fear of retaliation. To throw more salt on his heart's wound, Anthony has also returned home to his murdered younger brother, Angelo, who has been cut down by a hit-man with mysterious motivations; made more mysterious by the fact that the murder took place in the middle of an attempted suicide on Angelo's own part.
